Teodor Nicolau

 

Romanian-Finnish composer Teodor Nicolau was born in 1947 in Turda, Romania. He studied the violin in Cluj and Bucharest and received his diploma as a pupil of Avy Abramovich in 1971; he also studied the violin in France (with Christian Ferras). From 1976 to 1979 he studied in the conducting class of Jorma Panula at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and attended masterclasses with Sergiu Celibidache in Germany. During his early years in Romania, he studied composition with Celestin Cherebetiu in Cluj and was an active member of Anatol Vieru’s composition class at the Academia de Muzica in Bucharest. His teacher in instrumentation and composition during his conductor studies in Helsinki was Einar Englund.

Teodor Nicolau was a violinist in the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra 1971–1975 and in the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra 1976–2012. In 2009, Teodor Nicolau came sixth in the Crossover Composition Competition in Mannheim. Works by him have been released on three discs.
